ZUM MONINGER

A booklet prepared for guests of The Moninger in Karlsruhe, Germany,1901.

This book was provided to me when I visited Karlsruhe and the Moninger Brewery in May, 2000.

Printed in German, I had a translation prepared by Evelyn Swift, a native of Karlsruhe who coincidentally is an associate of my daughter, Denise Moninger Murray.

The booklet is small (19 x 14.3 cm or 7 1/2" x 5 5/8") with a heavy paper cover, and yellowed pages bound with two metal staples. Two postcards are bound into to back of the book.

This material is placed on the World Wide Web in the hopes it will inform and educate those who find things Moninger, and/or German beer history, of interest. You may also be interested in viewing "100 Year History of Brauerei Moninger " which details the history of the Moninger Brewery from 1856 to 1956.

Translations, photographs, scans and images, and web presentation are the sole property of David Moninger, who claims copyright to this material. Anyone wishing to obtain permission to display, copy, or otherwise disseminate this information must obtain the written permission of David Moninger.

WELCOME TO GUESTS

The Germans have the inherited virtue for thirst and still today it is a mystery to our neighbors in the South and West the way it runs like a red thread through our national development. In happy and sad days

this German thirst

has always been a true friend. A wise man once said "To drink a lot is not a shame - it is an honor!"

The thirst is just like the German: great and strong, steady and deep! This is the reason why a German thinks highly of the one drink that is the only one that will quench the thirst and that only can be brewed by a German:

the German beer

Even the worst enemy had to admit that the art of German beer brewing was much better than their own watery and sour tasting product. Where ever fate will take him: under the palms of the South or to the foot of a mountain, in every corner of the earth the German wanderer can find this product which will make his home a paradise and when he is away from home it will become his home. But the best beer can only come from one place: a German cellar.

The people of Karlsruhe can also be proud of the beer that is being brewed in our city and is also famous outside our walls: the Moninger beer. The good name of this beer has hundreds of faithful guest come to the old house in the Kaiserstrasse and we have to thank them that we could build the big corner house next to it. We tried to build this new house in a true German way of art. This majestic building creates a little magic in this sober time of ours. It is decorated with northern Gods and heroes (now follows the names and stories of these gods and heroes).

FLOOR PLANS

We now enter the inside of the building through the two doors in the middle entrance and we get to two stairways. The one on the left leads to the bar rooms upstairs, the one to the right to the living quarters of the top floors. In the big show room in the corner one can find an art gallery. And now let us dive into the crowd of people - we enter the main room "Die Badische Halle"!

With its wood decoration and brown color it creates a very comfortable atmosphere. There are twelve large paintings on the walls, which contain the sights and cities of the surrounding area. Like in the old days one can come here to enjoy and relax and have some fun with friends. The samestylee can be found in the rooms on the second floor. The stairs end at first in the smaller room with the blue ceiling.

Let us hope that also in the new rooms of the "Moninger" we will never have to miss the happy crowed of people which we could always find in the old building and which had a great appreciation for the art of brewing. And to all guests we would like to extend a warm "welcome" and "prosit"!

INTERIOR ROOMS

From there on to your right you enter the large "Kapitalsaal". The light green and white walls and ceilings, the open fireplace and the light green tiles of the tables create a very nice and happy sight. And here is where also the women can feel comfortable because they may not enjoy the loudness of downstairs.

From the two doors in the back one can reach the "Konkordiensaal" through the left door, and the kitchen rooms through the other. Now we go back and enter the corner room with the red wood panels: the playroom.

From here we get into the last part of the new building which has brown wood panels with the large gothic cabinet inside. Due to its noble wood walls the room was called "The Ark". Here one can find the kind of people that are more subdued and laid back, that enjoy drinking in a peaceful round, free from all obligations and where they can extend the day into night, and the night into day.

[ The subsequent pages contain a listing of men and their jobs, which worked together with the architect Hermann Walder on the completion of the new building. ]
